crochet tutorial :: simple stars

These small stars are really easy to make!  Each one has five points that are formed around a center ring.

Start by chaining 5:

Use a slip stitch to close your chain into a ring:

Chain 5 more stitches:

Single crochet in each stitch back down that chain so you end up back at the ring:

Then do one single crochet into the ring to make sure that little bit of crochet is snuggly attached to the ring.  That's the first point of your star:

Chain 5 again.  We're starting the second point of your star:

Single crochet in each stitch back down the chain so you end up back at the ring.  Do one more single crochet into ring so that "arm" of the star is snuggly attached to the ring, just like before:

Continue in the same way, creating each point by chaining 5 and working back to the ring:

When you have made 5 points simply join the last point with the base of the first one with a slip stitch for a clean look:

Weave in your loose ends:

And your star is finished!

Now this is the first perfectly simple star pattern I've come across. Thanks for sharing! Just made my first one -- think I might make a starfish banner for my bathroom. Best wishes, Tammy

I'm a bit confused about the 5th point. Do I still connect it to the ring with a single crochet, or do I just do a slip stitch into the ring??
Thanks!

Gail,
I connected the last point to the base of the first point with a slip stitch. I believe I bypassed the center ring altogether.

You can try your variation, though, and it might even be better : )

Thanks Rachel. It's coming out so cute! I'm making the stars into a garland, connecting each star with chain stitch.THanks for sharing this cute design.
